Sulpicia III

Salvete omnes,

Sulpicia III here we come! This poem is the sequel to the harrowing circumstances Sulpicia finds herself in during II. To recap, she hates her birthday because her uncle, who she says cares too much for her, has offered to take her to the countryside. Sulpicia talks about how frustrate she is and that her will has been taken away from her because this trip will take her away from her lovely Cerinthus. Let’s see what happens next, it’s a short sequel.

Scis iter ex animo sublatum triste puellae?
natali Romae iam licet esse suo.
Omnibus ille dies nobis natalis agatur,
qui nec opinanti nunc tibi forte venit.

You know the gloomy journey has been lifted from the mind of the girl?

She is allowed now to be in Rome for her own birthday!

May that day of birth be honored by us all,

Which now comes to you, as luck would have it, and not by imagining.

Exciting!! Sulpicia gets to stay in Rome for her birthday and see Cerinthus. Cerinthus was most likely a client of Sulpicia’s father’s, so it’s possible that if a celebration was held for her in Rome he would be invited. This is just a little snippet of poetry, but it’s exciting to see Sulpicia sharing all the little details of her life. Speaking of details, this next poem will have some choice ones, so I’m excited.
